What To Look For When Your Cat Is Constipated

Cat constipation is not very common, but it has to be treated diligently, because it can be a sign of serious problems.  What to look for when your cat is constipated is their diet. Cats need to eat a balanced diet that gives them enough quantities of fiber – not too much, not too little.  It can be also caused by furballs, worms and even lack of physical activity.

Symptoms of Cat Constipation

To spot the symptoms, we must understand bowel movements in out cats.  They normally have two bowel movements a day, but when they have constipation, the number of bowel movements are increased and the feces are small, and may present blood or mucosa.

If you notice these symptoms and that your cat strains with bowel movements and the feces are hard, and the symptoms last more than 2 days, you should take your cat to the veterinary clinic.

Other cat constipation symptoms include:

  1. Lack of appetite
  2. Bloating
  3. Stomach discomfort
  4. Hard stool

Cat Constipation Treatment

The veterinary clinic will give a cat constipation treatment depending on the causes and the severity of the problem.  Sometimes surgery may be needed, such as in the case of intestinal blockage.  This may be the only way to deal with this problem.

In other cases, there is no blockage in the intestine so, the doctor usually will prescribe special laxatives or even the use of enema.  The laxative will also depend on the severity, avoid using a laxative without consulting the doctor.  This is very dangerous.

Besides this treatment, you will need to deal with cat constipation with the help of a good diet.  Fiber is very important when it comes to constipation, so ensure your cat is eating food that provides it.  Almost all commercial cat food contains good levels of fiber, but it will be better if you feed your cat with homemade food.  Homemade food is healthier, but it needs to provide also the fiber needs of your cat.
